In this picture, the model's right hand is holding a round mirror while the left hand seems to be reaching inside the mirror. The hands are placed roughly at the bottom right of the rule of thirds, which help directs the viewer toward the main subject of the picture. Additionally, the shallow depth of field also attributes to directing the viewing toward the hands. This picture has a sense of curiosity, and questioning the existence of something that is beyond this world. I believe that this picture does not convey a very strong message, I should've have use a bigger mirror. However, I do think that this picture is a success for the assignment, because the most emphasized part of the picture is the hands and the picture cuts off at the for arms.
The dawn of digital photography can be traced back to the Space Race. The first digital camera was invented by Steven Sasson in 1975. According to Sasson, the camera was made out of different parts collected around the Kodak factory. The first camera took 23 seconds to "record" a picture, the pictures it takes are in black and white which are stored in a cassette tape. The creation of the digital camera started the modern digital photography that we all know today.
This is a close up picture using shallow depth of field. At the center of the portrait is Mattie; she stares into space which creates a sense of hopefulness. In my opinion, this portrait has a good range of black and white. However, the left side of her face is very bright and blurry. The unfocused background allows more emphasis to be put on the main subject, the focal point lying in the middle of the picture. I want to tell the viewers that even though they are having a bad day, there will always be something good to look forward to the following day. Since this is my first time creating a black and white photograph using film, I know that I made many mistakes. Next time, I will try to apply my knowledge of the principles of design and learn how to operate the camera better.
