This is a close up picture using shallow depth of field. At the center of the portrait is Mattie; she stares into space which creates a sense of hopefulness. In my opinion, this portrait has a good range of black and white. However, the left side of her face is very bright and blurry. The unfocused background allows more emphasis to be put on the main subject, the focal point lying in the middle of the picture. I want to tell the viewers that even though they are having a bad day, there will always be something good to look forward to the following day. Since this is my first time creating a black and white photograph using film, I know that I made many mistakes. Next time, I will try to apply my knowledge of the principles of design and learn how to operate the camera better.
